Wilson Cary Nicholas to Thomas Jefferson, 1 June 1819

From Wilson Cary Nicholas

Richmond June 1st 1819

My Dear Sir

I enclose two notes which I beg the favour of you to endorse for me & return by the first mail. I ought to have done it by the last mail but it escaped me. Two of my daughters & my grandchild will leave this for Milton the first good day. What can or ought to be done to alleviate the distress of the country at the present moment? Is the question asked by every man I see, but no man answers it. Will the people bear such dreadful sacrifices as they are threatened with?

Most sincerely & respectfully your hum. Serv.

W. C. Nicholas

RC (DLC); endorsed by TJ as received 6 June 1819 and so recorded in SJL. RC (MHi); address cover only; with PoC of TJ to James Leitch, 21 Oct. 1820, on verso; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello Milton”; franked; postmarked Richmond, 3 June.

The enclosed notes probably included Nicholas’s promissory note dated Richmond, 12 May 1819, which reads “Sixty days after date I promise to pay Thomas Jefferson Esqr or order without offset negotiable & payable at the office of the Bank of the United States at Richmond ten thousand dollars for value received” (MS in ViU: TJP; written in Nicholas’s hand on a small scrap and signed by him; at head of text: “$10,000”; endorsed on verso by Nicholas and TJ, with additional notation in an unidentified hand: “W C Nicholas 10000 July 11/14”).
