Thomas Eston Randolph to Thomas Jefferson, 3 September 1809
From Thomas Eston Randolph
Sunday 3d Sepr 1809
Dear Sir
I had depended on getting a Gig in Milton (which I have been in the habit of hiring) to take my Son to School. it is at present out—and very uncertain when it will return—If you can without any inconvenience accomodate me with the loan of yours—you will very much oblige me—I propose to set off on Tuesday and expect to return in a week—
Thos Eston Randolph
RC (MHi); dateline below signature; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr”; endorsed by TJ as received 4 Sept. 1809 and so recorded in SJL; with unrelated calculations by TJ on verso.
Thomas Eston Randolph (1767–1842) was the son of TJ’s uncle William Randolph and the husband of Jane Cary Randolph, the sister of TJ’s son-in-law Thomas Mann Randolph. In 1805 Thomas Eston Randolph purchased Glenmore, across the Rivanna from Milton, and some eight years later he disposed of this property and moved to Ashton, adjoining TJ’s Pouncey’s tract about five miles east of Monticello. TJ sometimes used Randolph’s boats for shipments from Richmond, and in 1808 and 1809 Randolph leased Lego and some lands at Milton from TJ. From 1814 Randolph leased TJ’s flour mill, first in conjunction with Thomas Mann Randolph and then by himself. In 1822 his daughter Mary Elizabeth Cleland Randolph married TJ’s grandson Francis Eppes. Randolph moved his family to Florida after TJ’s death and became a federal marshal there in 1831 (
