PoC (MHi); on verso of reused address cover of Daniel Call to TJ, 18 May 1820; at foot of text: “W. G. Pendleton esq. Register of the land office”; endorsed by TJ as a letter of 7 July 1820 and so recorded in SJL.

William Garland Pendleton (1788–1839), attorney and public official, was probably a native of Amherst County. By 1810 he had moved to Richmond, where he served as register of the Virginia Land Office, 1814–23, as clerk of the local chancery court, 1828–31, and as one of the commissioners of the Superior Court of Law and Chancery in 1832. Pendleton was also proctor of the University of Virginia, 1832–36. The owner of five slaves in 1820 and nine a decade later, he relocated late in life to Lynchburg, where he died (Joseph Saxton Pendleton’s 1935 membership application in Sons of the American Revolution archive, Louisville, Ky.; Louise Pecquet du Bellet, Some Prominent Virginia Families [1907], 4:278–9; JSV description begins Journal of the Senate of Virginia description ends [1814–15 sess.], 5–6 [15 Oct. 1814]; [1818–19 sess.], 43 [5 Jan. 1819]; [1821–22 sess.], 45–6 [11 Jan. 1822]; JHD description begins Journal of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia description ends [1816–17 sess.], 136 [7 Jan. 1817]; [1820–21 sess.], 117 [15 Jan. 1821]; Richmond Enquirer, 8 Apr. 1828, 6 May 1831, 11 Sept. 1832; DNA: RG 29, CS, Richmond, 1810–30; A Sketch of the History of the University of Virginia together with a Catalogue [1859], 13; Lynchburg Virginian, 4 Feb. 1839; gravestone inscription in Presbyterian Cemetery, Lynchburg).

James Gibbon was the collector at Richmond.
