RC (DLC); beneath signature: “Thomas Jefferson, Esqre”; endorsed by TJ as received 17 Dec. 1812 and so recorded in SJL. Translation by Dr. Genevieve Moene.

The works Dufief sent TJ this morning (ce matin) were (1) John Melish’s map, described as “an elegant colored sheet map for only a dollar” (Richmond Enquirer, 23 Oct. 1812) and meant to be paired with his publication, A description of the British Possessions in North America and of the most important places along the lines in the United States: intended as an accompaniment to Melish’s Map of the seat of war in North America (Philadelphia, 1812), and (2) Thomas Simpson, The Doctrine and Application of Fluxions (London, 1805; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends no. 3677). With that parcel or this letter he also forwarded a receipt for $6.18 for his purchase of Simpson’s book from Philadelphia book publishers Kimber & Conrad (MS in DLC; dated 4 Nov. 1812; written in the hand of John Humphrey Jr. on a small slip of paper).
