John Winn (d. 1837) moved to Charlottesville from Fluvanna County early in the 1800s. He and his brother-in-law Twyman Wayt soon formed one of Charlottesville’s preeminent mercantile firms. Winn later facilitated the acquisition of some of the materials used to build the University of Virginia.
