John Winn (d. 1837) moved to Charlottesville from Fluvanna County early in the 1800s. He and his brother-in-law Twyman Wayt soon formed one of Charlottesville’s preeminent mercantile firms. Winn later facilitated the acquisition of some of the materials used to build the University of Virginia. He lived on the Belmont estate from 1813, and from 1803 until his death he served as Charlottesville’s postmaster (Woods, Albemarle description begins Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia, 1901 description ends , 341, 346–7; MB description begins James A.
