George Jefferson to Thomas Jefferson, 25 November 1811

From George Jefferson

Richmond 25th Novr 1811

Dear Sir

Having received the form of the bond which I am to execute previous to entering upon the duties of my office, I avail myself of your kind offer of joining me in it, and now inclose it for your signature.

I have not inserted the third name, as I wish to take the chance (small as it is) of Mr Gibson’s return previous to my departure: there being but very few persons to whom I like to lay myself under such an obligation, which greatly enhances the favor you have done me—for which, to say nothing of your many other kindnesses, I can never sufficiently thank you.

Have the goodness to inclose the bond to Gibson & Jefferson, as, should there be any delay in the mail, I may possibly be gone before it is returned, in which case I shall leave a letter in which for it to be inclosed, with orders for it to be forwarded.

I am Dear Sir Your ever faithful friend

Geo. Jefferson

RC (MHi); at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson esqr”; endorsed by TJ as received 28 Nov. 1811, but mistakenly recorded in SJL as received on the day it was written. Enclosure: George Jefferson’s consular bond, 25 Nov. 1811, obligating him, TJ, and William Wardlaw to pay $2,000 to the United States if Jefferson did not “truly and faithfully discharge the duties of his said office, according to law,” and “truly account for all monies, goods and effects, which may come into his possession by virtue of the laws of the United States, or of his said office” (printed form in DNA: RG 39, SB; with names, date, and title of appointment filled in by Jefferson and signed by him, TJ, and Wardlaw; with Jefferson’s signature witnessed by James Ligon and William S. Warwick, TJ’s signature witnessed by Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Charles L. Bankhead, and Wardlaw’s signature witnessed by Corbin Warwick and Ligon; with signed approval by James Monroe at the State Department, 3 Apr. 1812; endorsed in an unidentified hand: “Bond George Jefferson Consul 1811”).
