Dr Sir,

Mr Beverly Roy Scott eldest son of Our acquaintance Majr Saml Scott, feeling the amor Patriæ glowing in his bosom & wishing to Join Several of his Friends who are ingaged in the Marine Service requests me to introduce him to your Attention, whishing to procure a letter to the Secretary of the Navy in Order to be recieved into the Service of the U.S. as a Midshipman the respectability of his Family & the sacrafice of domestic prospects in civil Life, certainly intitled Mr Scott to my respectful attention I therefore take the liberty of recommending him to your Notice

Beverly Roy Scott (1796–1837), the son of TJ’s legal adversary Samuel Scott, was a native of Campbell County. He served as a midshipman in the United States Navy from 1812 until his resignation dated 11 Dec. 1815. Returning to Virginia, Scott received tracts of land in Bedford and Campbell counties from his parents in 1817–18 and settled in the former county. After his father’s death in 1822, he was an executor of the estate, which became entangled in a lawsuit by Samuel Scott’s sons-in-law. At his death Beverly Scott owned thirty-four slaves and other real and personal property with a total value in excess of $30,000 (Callahan, U.S. Navy description begins Edward W. Callahan, List of Officers of the Navy of the United States and of the Marine Corps from 1775 to 1900, 1901, repr. 1969 description ends , 486 [commission allegedly dated 18 June 1812]; Campbell Co.
