Beverly Roy Scott (1796–1837), the son of TJ’s legal adversary Samuel Scott, was a native of Campbell County. He served as a midshipman in the United States Navy from 1812 until his resignation dated 11 Dec. 1815. Returning to Virginia, Scott received tracts of land in Bedford and Campbell counties from his parents in 1817–18 and settled in the former county. After his father’s death in 1822, he was an executor of the estate, which became entangled in a lawsuit by Samuel Scott’s sons-in-law. At his death Beverly Scott owned thirty-four slaves and other real and personal property with a total value in excess of $30,000 (Callahan, U.S. Navy description begins Edward W.
