Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Eston Randolph, 3 June 1816

To Thomas Eston Randolph

Monticello June 3. 16.

Dear Sir

In my letter of the other day I mentioned that the credit of 122.50 D for corn formerly bought from mr Bankhead as mentioned by Colo T. M. Randolph, was correct, and reduced our balance to 176.26½ D

since that, having occasion to pay mr Fagg 49.58 D and not having the money, he told me it was due to you, & that an order on you would answer his purpose, which accordingly I gave him, & it reduces our balance to 126.68   ever & affectionately

Your’s

Th: Jefferson

PoC (MHi); on verso of reused address cover of John Tayloe Lomax to TJ, 11 Mar. 1816; between closing and signature: “T. E. Randolph esq.”; endorsed by TJ.

TJ’s letter of the other day is not recorded in SJL and has not been found. The payment to John fagg on Randolph’s account was for 85 bushels of oats and is listed elsewhere as $53.12½ (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1324; TJ to Randolph, 18 June 1816).
