Recieved of Thos Jefferson an order on Gibson and Jefferson of Richmond for 116. D 61 C which, when recieved, will be in full discharge of the within account principal & interest.

William Miller

MS (CSmH: JF); written on a small scrap; with undated account in Joel Yancey’s hand on recto and dated receipt in TJ’s hand, signed by Miller, on verso; endorsed by TJ: “Miller William”; also containing calculations by TJ at foot of recto and head of verso relating to both the above transaction and TJ’s 22 Nov. 1817 payment to Robert Miller, through Gibson & Jefferson, of “138.43 balance due for his services of 1816. & for a mare bought, as pr. settlemt. with J. William J. Miller lived near Fauquier Court House (later Warrenton) before working in 1816 and 1817 as the overseer at TJ’s Tomahawk plantation, part of Poplar Forest (TJ to Thaddeus Norris, 17 Sept. 1815; TJ’s Agreement with Miller, 17 Dec. 1817, with Miller’s Receipt, 22 Oct. 1818; MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, 2 vols., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1332, 1340, 1347).
