The furniture tax was the 18 Jan. 1815 “Act to provide additional revenues for defraying the expenses of government, and maintaining the public credit, by laying duties on household furniture, and on gold and silver watches” (U.S. Statutes at Large description begins Richard Peters, ed., The Public Statutes at Large of the United States … 1789 to March 3, 1845, 1845–67, 8 vols. description ends , 3:186–92).

A month later TJ paid the direct tax on Poplar Forest in full and duly obtained a receipt for $189.40 dated 14 Mar. 1815 (MS in ViU: TJP; on a small scrap; entirely in Deputy Sheriff William Salmon’s hand and signed by him for Thomas B. Greer; endorsed by TJ: “Sheriff Bedford”).
