MS (PWacD: Sol Feinstone Collection, on deposit PPAmP); in an unidentified hand, with first five signatures and amounts written in that same hand and remaining signatures and amounts in the hands of the respective subscribers; undated; one surname illegible.

This subscription list was probably enclosed in a letter from Reuben Lindsay, Matthew Maury, Thomas Hamton, Richard Duke, James G. Waddell, and Thomas W. Maury to Thomas Mann Randolph, Alexander Garrett, Charles L. Bankhead, John Watson, John Gilmer, Charles Everette, and Reuben Maury written from Lindsay’s Store, 14 Sept. 1812, stating that a meeting held two days previously at the same place had appointed the signatories a committee to solicit the cooperation of committees in other parts of Albemarle County to raise contributions to equip a volunteer company to serve for twelve months; that the same meeting had named the addressees a committee to receive subscriptions from its section of Albemarle; that a list of local subscriptions is enclosed; and that the “present crisis” requires that they “promote the encouragement and equipment of those, who will voluntarily step forth” (ViU: Maury Family Correspondence). The effort to organize a volunteer company evidently failed. TJ’s extant letters and financial accounts say nothing of this subscription, and early the following year Elizabeth Trist asked a friend what she thought of the news of “our friend T. M. Randolph enroling his name as a private soldier? a man capable of being a commander in Chief I do suppose he has felt some chagrine at the Citizens of Albemarle not exibiting more public sperit for I never heard of any volunteer Corps being raised there” (Trist to Catharine Wistar Bache, 1 Feb. 1813 [PPAmP: Bache Papers]).
