Washington, 4. July 1819.
Dear Sir,
I received, about eight or ten days ago, under Cover from you, a Letter for mr Rush, which I immediately forwarded by young Mr Maury, the son of our Consul at Liverpool, who has already sailed, I presume, in one of the Packets from New york; and I received yesterday, also under your Cover, three other Letters for other Persons, which I shall lose no time in likewise forwarding. TJ’s covering letters to Brent of ca. 22 and ca. 29 June 1819 are not recorded in SJL and have not been found. On the latter date TJ noted in SJL that he had sent “Appleton, Cathalan, Debure. 4plicates of excha.,” presumably covered either by brief letters of transmittal to each (not found and not recorded in SJL) or copies of TJ to Stephen Cathalan, 26 May 1819, de Bure Frères, 27 May 1819, and Thomas Appleton, 28 May 1819.
