To George Washington from Henry Bouquet, 11 July 1758

From Henry Bouquet

Camp near Reas Town 11 July 1758

Sir,

Major Lewis with the two hundred men under his command arrived here last night. I am extremely obliged to you for this extraordinary dispatch. Their dress should be our pattern in this expedition.1

The mistake of the 6000 of flour is a great disappointment. I beg you will continue to order provisions for the Maryland troops, as they are to be supplied by the crown.2 As soon as the communication will be opened, I shall replace what may be consumed. We begin tomorrow to cut the road on this side to meet Col. Mercer and save him the trouble of going so far.

I have heard nothing of Genl Forbes since the 19th June. With the most sincere regard, Your most obedt servt

Sprague transcript, DLC:GW; ALS, sold by Thomas Birch’s Sons, item 211, 1891; ALS, sold in 1939, American Book Prices Current, 45 (1939), 362.

1Bouquet on 8 July ordered GW to send 200 men to him in Raystown. Maj. Andrew Lewis’s detachment from the camp at Fort Cumberland included his own company from the 1st Virginia Regiment and that of Capt. Thomas Fleming from the 2d Virginia Regiment. In the weekly return of his regiment on 10 July, Col. William Byrd noted that Fleming, two lieutenants, one ensign, “5 Serjts & 119 private march’d yesterday with Majr Lewis to Ray’s town” (DLC:GW).

2For the “mistake,” see GW to Bouquet, 9 July, n.1.
