To George Washington from Oliver Wolcott, Jr., 23 July 1796

From Oliver Wolcott, Jr.

Phila. July 23d 1796

Sir.

I have had the honour to receive your favours dated July 13th1 18th2 & 20th and shall punctually obey your directions.

The money mentioned by Judge Addison was paid to me;3 in addition to the advances requested by Mr Kitt I have paid Captain Tingey for freight of Wine £66.13.4 Currency or Dolls. 177 77/100—the duties have not yet been demanded4—I shall pay Mr McEuen as soon as I can see him.

I know of nothing to communicate to the President which he will not receive from other quarters. the public mind appears to be generally tranquil & satisfied.

I wrote a private Letter dated about the 9th or 11th instant, but as I kept no copy, I may be mistaken—the Letter was on two sheets of paper & contained an acknow[ledgement] of your Letters of the 4th & 6th instant—I mention this merely that it may be known whether it went safely.5 I have the honour to be with perfect respect Sir, your most obedt servant

Oliver Wolcott Jr

1See Wolcott to GW, 6 July, n.2.

3See Alexander Addison to GW, 13 July, found at GW to Addison, 8 July, n.4.

4For this wine shipment, see GW’s first letter to Wolcott, 13 June, and n.1 to that document; see also n.5 below.

5GW replied to Wolcott from Mount Vernon on 29 July: ‘Your letter of the 23d instant came to me by the last Post; and the letter therein alluded to, dated the 11th, was received in due course. The receipt of which I as certainly acknowledged, whatever may have become of it; but having kept no copy thereof, I am unable to repeat the contents. Sure I am, because I remember well, that an acknowledgment was given by the Post after it was received.

“I am glad the freight of my Wine to, and from India has been paid to Captn Tingey; and whenever the duties are demanded I pray they may be paid also, if you have means of mine in your hands sufficient thereto” (ALS, CtHi: Oliver Wolcott, Jr., Papers; no prior acknowledgment of Wolcott’s letter to GW dated 11 July has been found). Wolcott acknowledged GW’s letter dated 29 July when he wrote GW on 3 August.
