My last messenger to Colo. Gist is just Returnd, and Brings the inclosd note from Majr Tallmadge.1 I believe the enemy murst be Gon in and what Can keep Gist I cant conseive. I have order’d my Corps to halt Short of Chatterton hill unt[i]ll Gist arr[i]ves. I have Thrown Majr Lee with his Corps on the East Side of the Brunx with orders to Patroll To New Rotchel and East Chester Indeed I have Patrolls on every road and By way Leading to the enemy. I am Your Excellencys Obt Servt

1. The enclosed letter, which Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge wrote to Scott at “½ past 10 oClock” on this date, reads: “I this moment rec’d Yours pr Bearer, having sent off your former note, pr Dragoon, to Colo. Gist, as also the Dragoons therein mentioned, am much surprised that no accts have been recd of Colo. Gist—I hove now dispatched an Officer with your last note, who will be punctual in delivering it himself. My Patroles have been all over mile-square & on Volantine’s hill—no intelligence from that Qr—As I am wide on Colo. Gist’s left, have ordered my Patroles which have gone near him to report to Genl Scott, & will shortly proceed to your Qrs myself” (DLC:GW).
