Inclosed is a Copy of the Intelligence brot by one Ebr Atwood who appears to be a very honest intelligble fellow that escaped from the Enemy last monday Night which I thot proper to Communicate to your Excellency immediately—being the best account of the Enemys movements & the latest I have Recd sd Atwood was Mate the Sloop Dove.1 with the highest esteem & respect am your Excellencys Obedt humbl. 1The enclosed intelligence report, written at Peekskill, N.Y., on 17 July 1777, reads: “Ebenezar Atwood of Cape Cod was taken off the Capes of Delaware the 8th of March—was taken from on Board the Prison Ship three weeks Last monday [23 June], and put on Board the sloop Dove—the Sloop went to staten Island a fortnight Yesterday [2 July], and took on board 32 Horses—sprang a Leak and went back to the City, to Repair & was orderd to be at Staten Island Last Tuesday [15 July] to sail with the Fleet—on Monday [14 July] he Deserted with a Lad who belonged to Philada—Last Saturday [12 July] morning the Troops were all embarkd but 6 Broken Regiments and some of the Jersey Core, who were to Remain there—The Cannon, horses, Flat Bottomd boats, Waggons &c. taken on board—20 Flat Bottomd Boats with 50 men each Highlanders & Hessians went Last Monday [14 July] to Kings Bridge, about 25 or 30 Sail of Vesels had horses on board, the heights on Staten Island fortifyed about 20 Sail of Ships were at the City to take on board the troops at the City, the Eagle was to fall down to Staten Island last Tuesday. The Inhabitants & Soldiers are much dispirited, no Inhabitant or Soldiers Wives or Children are Sufferd to go on board the transports—The ship now in the No. River is An Old India man Cutt down, Calld the Slaughter House, Carries 20 Guns 24 lb & 18 lb is just Out of the dock & Sent up the River. That ship has took on board forty days provisions for Horses & drivers & five months provisions for the troops besides what is in the Store ships” (DLC:GW).
