To George Washington from La Luzerne, 21 December 1780

From La Luzerne

A Philadelphie le 21. Xbre. 1780.

Monsieur

LS, DLC:GW.

GW replied to La Luzerne from headquarters at New Windsor on 9 Jan. 1781: “I was duly honored with Your Excellency’s Letter of the 21st of Decr and have transmitted the Dispatches to Sir Henry Clinton, by a safe conveyance” (LS, in David Humphreys’s writing, FrPMAE; Df, DLC:GW; copy, FrPMAE; Varick transcript, DLC:GW). The dispatches have not been identified.

1The last two letters of this word are superscripted, suggesting a contraction for “chevalier” (sir).
