[Philadelphia] June 12. 93.
Th: Jefferson has the honor to submit to the President his answer to mister Genet on the subject of the French debt.1 he had prepared it yesterday morning, but unluckily left it at home,2 which has delayed it a day.

1. Jefferson’s letter to Edmond Genet of 11 June explained the administration’s position on a French plan for payment of the U.S. debt to France and enclosed Alexander Hamilton’s report on the subject (, 26:252). Tobias Lear wrote Jefferson later this same date that GW approved the letter to Genet “& wishes the Secretary to send it as soon as convenient” (DLC: Jefferson Papers).
2. Jefferson’s summer residence was a small house just outside of Philadelphia, near Gray’s Ferry and on the east side of the Schuylkill River (Jefferson to Moses Coxe, 7 Mar. 1793, , 25:332).
