Gentlemen of the Senate,

I nominate David Rittenhouse, of Pennsylvania, to be Director of the Mint.1

1The Senate received this message from Tobias Lear this day and ordered it to lie for consideration after reading it. On 14 April the Senate considered the nomination and resolved to consent to the appointment (Executive Journal, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America: From the commencement of the First, to the termination of the Nineteenth Congress. Vol. 1. Washington, D.C., 1828. description ends 1:119–20). Lear informed Jefferson on 14 April of the Senate’s concurrence (DNA: RG 59, George Washington’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State), and Rittenhouse’s commission as director of the U.S. Mint was filled out that day (DLC:GW).
