Earlier on this date Henry Knox sent GW a list containing these nominations (DLC:GW).

For events leading to Dirck Schuyler’s resignation and Peter L. Van Alen’s appointment, see Knox to GW, 28 Aug. 1792, and note 3.

This nominee was probably Howell Lewis (b. 1759) of Goochland County, Va. (see Sorley, Lewis of Warner Hall, description begins Merrow Egerton Sorley, comp. Lewis of Warner Hall: The History of a Family . . .. 1935. Reprint. Baltimore, 1979. description ends 445–47, 483–84).

William Preston requested such an appointment in his letter to GW of 10 May 1792.

The Senate approved these nominations on 21 Nov. 1792 (see Executive Journal, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America: From the commencement of the First, to the termination of the Nineteenth Congress. Vol. 1. Washington, D.C., 1828. description ends 1:126), and on that date Tobias Lear sent Knox notification of the Senate’s confirmations (DLC:GW).
