From George Washington to the United States Senate, 28 January 1793

To the United States Senate

January the 28th 1793.

Gentlemen of the Senate,

I nominate Thomas Overton, to be Inspector of the Revenue for Survey No. 1 in the District of North Carolina; vice James Read, resigned.

Thomas Benbury, to be Inspector of the Revenue for Survey No. 2 in the District aforesaid; his Commission as Inspector of Survey No. 3. being vacated in consequence of an alteration in the Surveys.1

Daniel McKissack, to be Inspector of the Revenue for Survey No. 5. in the District aforesaid; vice Joseph McDowell, resigned; and

Henry Voigt, of Pennsylvania, to be Chief Coiner in the Mint of the United States.

The Senate confirmed GW’s nominations on 29 Jan. (Executive Journal, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America: From the commencement of the First, to the termination of the Nineteenth Congress. Vol. 1. Washington, D.C., 1828. description ends 1:127). GW signed the appointees’ commissions two days later (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 40). Tobias Lear informed Thomas Jefferson of the Senate’s approval of these nominations in a letter dated 30 Jan. 1793 (DLC:GW).

1. During the Revolutionary War, Thomas Benbury (1736–1793) was a member of several N.C. provincial congresses, the Chowan County committee of safety, the Chowan County militia, and from 1776 to 1782, the state legislature. In 1784 he was appointed the state collector of the customs for Albemarle Sound. GW appointed Benbury collector at Edenton, N.C., in 1790 and inspector of North Carolina’s third survey and Edenton’s port inspector in 1791. Benbury died on 6 Feb. 1793.
