From Alexander Hamilton to Robert Morris, [19 March 1790]

To Robert Morris1

[New York, March 19, 1790]

Dr Sir

I find that I cannot answer as soon as I expected. The absence of a Gentleman, who has taken a ride out of town, will probably postpone my decision till afternoon. The moment I am ready, you shall hear from me.

Yrs. sincerely

A Hamilton

1When this letter was written, Morris was a member of the United States Senate from Pennsylvania.

Although it cannot be stated with certainty, it seems likely that this letter concerns H’s efforts to sell to Morris stock in the Bank of North America owned by John B. Church. Church was Elizabeth Hamilton’s brother-in-law, and H acted as his agent or representative while (as was now the case) he was in his native England. For the negotiations concerning this sale, see Morris to H, November 13, 1789, April 4, 1790 (PAH description begins Harold C. Syrett, ed., The Papers of Alexander Hamilton (New York and London, 1961– ). description ends , V, 513–14; VI, 348–49); H to Thomas Willing, February 20–23, March 30, 1790 (PAH description begins Harold C.
