I inclose reccommendations for granting Capt Romayne the vacant appointment of Assistant Inspector General.1 The appointment will be merely nominal, to carry the rank, as the office will be abolished when the Army shall be discharged. The reasons for soliciting it, however, are stated in the reccommendations; and I will thank you to favor me with your decision on the subject. Capt. Romayne has certainly great estimation among his Brother Officers. I am, Dr Sir, most respectfully & faithfully Yrs.

1. Dallas probably enclosed letters written to him by Maj. Gen. Jacob Brown, 30 Apr. 1815 (1 p.), stating that he had recommended Capt. James T. B. Romayne for the appointment in a February 1815 letter to James Monroe and that it “was due him for services rendered”; and Brig. Gen. Eleazer W. Ripley, 2 May [1815] (3 pp.), reporting that Romayne had been acting as assistant inspector general for a year “in the most acceptable manner,” and urging the appointment because the rank would gratify Romayne and position him well in case of “any future augmentation of the army” (DNA: RG 94, Letters Received, filed under “Romayne”). Filed with the letters is a cover sheet bearing Dallas’s 8 May 1815 note: “A commission to issue for Capt. Romayne as Assistant Inspector General, by order of the President.”
