Jacob Wagner to Tobias Lear, 6 August 1806 (Abstract)

Jacob Wagner to Tobias Lear, 6 August 1806 (Abstract)

§ Jacob Wagner to Tobias Lear. 6 August 1806, Department of State. “The Brig Franklin having reached Boston, the Tunisian Ambassador has declined taking his passage in her, for the reasons he states in his letter, of which a copy is enclosed.1 We have therefore been obliged to charter a Merchant vessel at Boston, which, besides the articles to be transhipped from the Franklin, will take on board the four field pieces with their carriages, the two Bureaux and the Secretary for the Bey. In explaining to the Bey, from the Ambassador’s letter, why the Brig did not accompany his return, you may add that whilst we supposed she must prove a very acceptable token of liberality, her history, which the Ambassador could give for the first time only at Boston, was unknown before her destination for Tunis was determined upon. The value of the Franklin that is to say the prime cost and outfit is a circumstance which it may be of use to you to know, if the equivalent for the captured Cruizer and prizes should be referred to that standard.

“Commodore Rogers in the Essex, the Brig Argus Capt. Hull, the Syren & Vixen Schooners, the Sloop Hornet & Gun Boats Nos. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 8. 9. 10 have arrived within a fortnight. Dr. Davis was to have taken his departure for the Mediterranean on the 1st. inst. I have received your letter of May last, but without the account current.2
