1. Knox had sent Lear on 26 April some unidentified papers to be submitted to the president (DLC:GW). The enclosures to this letter have not been identified, but the papers from William Blount might have been Blount’s letter to Knox of 20 Mar. 1792 that covered various letters and reports concerning the growing discontent among the inhabitants of the five lower Cherokee towns (see Carter, Territorial Papers, description begins Clarence Edwin Carter et al., eds. The Territorial Papers of the United States. 27 vols. Washington, D.C., 1934–69. description ends 4:129–30).

2. Knox added the postscript “All quiet at Pittsburg and its neighbourhood” to the receiver’s copy.
