The above was delivered by Mr Broome the brother of him who was the republican Candidate for member of congress for the city last year. He has resided these twenty years in New Haven & its vicinity & is recommended by Mr Osgood.

the above: Gallatin’s letter was written at the foot of another solicitation to TJ from Samuel Broome for the office of collector at New Haven. Dated New York, 12 Aug. 1803, Broome’s brief letter repeats his desire for the appointment formerly held by the late Samuel Bishop and promises to “furnish such documents for your information as I trust will prove satisfactory” (same; entirely in Broome’s hand; at head of text: “The President of the United States”).
Broome’s brother, John Broome of New York City, lost a bid for a seat in Congress in 1802 but received an appointment from TJ as a commissioner of bankruptcy later that same year (Vol. 37:461n, 516, 698, 708).
Samuel osgood was the naval officer at New York City (Vol. 40:346-7, 717-19).
