To Thomas Jefferson from Edmund Randolph, 13 November 1778

From Edmund Randolph

Wmsburg Novr. 13. 1778.

Dear Sir

Mr. Carrington, who is a defendant in the suit, brought by your Relation Jefferson vs. Reade’s administrators, obtained an order at the last court, that he, as being nonresident, should give security for costs at the next Term. Will you be so good, as to inform him of this, if he is within the circle of your correspondence? Be pleased to add, that dismission is the penalty on non compliance with the order. Sincerely yours,

Edm: Randolph

RC (Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, on deposit ViU); with apparently unrelated notations on verso: (in an unidentified hand) “Mr Jefferson per Shifflett Bad money Retd” and (in TJ’s hand) “Joyce Shifflet 125. Dollars to be exchanged. 70. bad.”

Prior to giving up his legal practice in 1774, TJ had been employed by his first cousin George Jefferson in a suit he filed as the executor of Field Jefferson, his father, against Mary Reade, Thomas Reade, and Paul Carrington, surviving administrators of Clement Reade (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, forthcoming in The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , legal section, 1 May 1773; TJ’s Case Book, No. 834, 1 May 1773).
