I did not discover the enclosed until my letter of yesterday had gone,

Enclosure: certificates for wine, New York, [21 Jan. 1818], attesting that four boxes of claret, each containing ten gallons divided into fifty bottles, and three casks of claret, each holding sixty gallons, had arrived on 21 Jan. from Marseille in the brig Agent, William W. Lewis, master (MS in MHi; consisting of seven printed forms, numbered 373–6 for the boxes and 863–5 for the casks; with blanks filled by J. Duryee; signed by John Kearny for Gelston and countersigned by John Haff, the customhouse inspector, with the latter’s separate numbering of 651–4 for the boxes and 657–9 for the casks).
