To Benjamin Harrison

In Council June 8. 1779.

Sir

Since receiving the resolutions of Congress calling for an additional sum of money, which I had the honor of transmitting to you yesterday, the inclosed address relating to the same subject, with the letter accompanying it has come to hand. I take the liberty through you of communicating it to the General assembly, and am Sir with the greatest esteem Your most obedient & most humble servant,

RC (ViW). Addressed in an unidentified hand to Harrison as Speaker. Endorsed: “Govrs. letter June 10. 1779. inclosing address to people as to taxation.” Enclosure: see explanatory note.

Resolutions of congress: These were the additional state quotas voted on 21 May (copy transmitted by Charles Thomson to TJ is in Vi); see entry for TJ’s missing letter to Harrison of 7 June, above. The inclosed address: Doubtless a copy of the Address to the Inhabitants of the United States of America (Evans 16636) drafted by John Dickinson, agreed upon in Congress, 26 May, and ordered printed (JCC description begins Worthington C. Ford and others, eds., Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789, Washington, D.C., 1904–37, 34 vols. description ends , xiv, 649–57). The House of Delegates ordered the Address to be printed in Va. Gaz. description begins Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg, 1751–1780, and Richmond, 1780–1781). Abbreviations for publishers of the several newspapers of this name, frequently published concurrently, include the following: C & D (Clarkson & Davis), D & H (Dixon & Hunter), D &N (Dixon & Nicolson), P & D (Purdie & Dixon).
