Niagara [New York] November 15, 1799. Describes his plans for repairing the fort,2 and discusses the friendly relations between British and American forces stationed on the Niagara River. States: “Two Regiments have arrived at Quebec3 & the Brittish force which will remain in Canada this winter amounts To upwards of Eight thousand regulars exclusive of two provincial Battalions.”

1. A native of Switzerland, Rivardi was a major in the First Regiment of Artillerists and Engineers and was the commanding officer at Fort Niagara.

This is a reference to the arrival of the Sixth Regiment of Foot (Royal Warwickshire Regiment) at Quebec on October 14, 1799, and the arrival of the Forty-first Regiment of Foot (Welsh Regiment) at Quebec on October 24, 1799 (Charles H.
