Dear Sir,
The original of the inclosed letter to Genl. Pinckney was written by Major Mountflorence,1 whose character and situation I presume you know. Last Saturday I recd. a copy from the Genl. which he desired me to communicate to you.

1. James Cole Mountflorence of North Carolina was a veteran of the American Revolution. After the war he practiced law in Nashville. He went to France in 1791, and he subsequently served as secretary to Fulwar Skipwith, the United States consul general. From September, 1798, to January, 1799, he was secretary pro tem to William Vans Murray, and he agreed to act as Murray’s honorary secretary after that date. In 1801 he became commercial agent for the United States at Paris (, 384–85).
