Nicholas Reib is upon me again. I presume the report of the committee of Feb. 11. 96. herein inclosed, & the resolution of Congress therein referred to of Dec. 19. 1782. shew the true ground of his claim, and the rule of settlement, and that his account shews what he has recieved. will mr Gallatin be so good as to have these papers looked at by the proper officer, and the objection or obstacle to paiment stated that I may return him an answer once for all, with his papers.
RC (DLC); on verso of address sheet from the Navy Department; addressed by TJ: “The Secretary of the Treasury” in place of “The President of the United States,” in a clerk’s hand; with directions in Gallatin’s hand written at a right angle to addresses: “Mr Gallatin requests Mr Nourse to give the explanations necessary to enable the President to get rid of this man. This paper & Reib’s letter not to go out of Mr Nourse’s hands—A.G.” Not recorded in SJL. Enclosures: for the 19 Dec. 1782 resolution of Congress, see Reib to TJ, 17 Feb. 1802. REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE: on 11 May 1796, the Committee of Claims in the House of Representatives presented a report on the 19 Feb. petition of Nicholas and Peter Reib, Andrew Bearsticker, and other artificers from Colonel Benjamin Flower’s artillery regiment (, 2:447–8, 550).
