Mrs Adams’es Respectfull Compliments to Dr Franklin, is much obliged to him for the oil he was so kind as to send her, and is very sorry that his indisposition deprived her of the Honour of his company to dinner.9 Mrs Adams takes the Liberty of recommending a Sedan Chair, by which the inconvenience arrising from a Carriage might be avoided—

9The dinner was meant to return the invitations from foreign diplomats. Among the guests were Staël von Holstein and the secretary of the Swedish legation, Per Olof von Asp; Baron von Geer, the former Swedish envoy to the Netherlands; and Walterstorff. Also in attendance were David Humphreys, William Short, Jonathan Jackson, Nathaniel Tracy, William and Anne Willing Bingham, Edward Bancroft, and John Paul Jones: Adams Correspondence, VI, 3–6.
