7The signature is torn, but only two or three letters can be missing. At least four persons named Rouse were heads of families in 1790 in Cecil County, Md., where North East is located.

8Probably Enoch Story, son of the proprietor of Pewter Platter Tavern in Philadelphia. Enoch was a co-founder of the Pennsylvania Mercury, 1755; served the British during their occupation of Philadelphia, 1777–78; was attainted of treason; and sought refuge in England.
