1GW enters this payment to Clinton on 16 June in his Philadelphia Cash Accounts, 9 May–22 September. It was to pay off what he owed for the joint purchase by him and Clinton in 1784 of a 6,000–acre tract of land in Montgomery County, N. Y. (see particularly GW to Clinton, 25 Nov. 1784, n.2; see also GW to Clinton, 5 Nov. 1786). George Clinton’s account with GW (NjMoHP), dated 5 Feb. 1787, shows GW’s payments in 1784 and 1785 on the principal and interest of the £2,500 that he owed for his moiety of the land, leaving the balance of £325.6 due. Clinton wrote on the bottom of this letter: “Recd £836 Dollars of Mr Wm Constable to whom gave a Rect in full Dated 12th June.”
