6Jones had corroborated his story some weeks before: ibid., p. 164. He obviously got no reply, for on July 7 he wrote again, this time in his own hand to BF. He was born in Dover, Del., served as midshipman under Jones, and suffered the loss of his right arm and a wound in his left hand. In consequence, “I am not fet for the Sea Serves.” APS.
