Tobias Lear to John Quincy Adams, 2 February 1791

Tobias Lear to John Quincy Adams

Wednesday Feby 2d 1791

Dear Sir,

When I was at Bush Hill this Morning it was my intention to have requested your Company to dine tomorrow at the Presidents, by his desire; but as I did not see you at that time it slipped my recollection, and occasions you the trouble of this letter, which is to make the same request—to which you will be kind enough to give an Answer by the Servant. I am Dear Sir Your most Obedt Servt

Tobias Lear

ALS, MHi: Adams Papers.

John Quincy Adams responded with a note to Lear dated 2 Feb., which reads: “Be pleased to accept my sincere thanks for the peculiar politeness with which you have communicated to me the honour of the Presidents invitation to dinner to-morrow; and it is with much regret that I am obliged to request you to make my excusses to him. My father had invited a large company to dinner to-morrow, previous to that which he received from the President, and as he will in consequence of that circumstance be absent himself, he has requested me to receive and attend upon the company in his stead” (DLC: Jonathan Bayard Smith Family Papers).
