Washington 27th April 1826.

Jeromus Johnson,1 Bartow White,2 Nicoll Fosdick3 and Henry Ashley,4 members of the house of representatives from the state of New York, are about to visit Virginia; and they propose to do themselves the honor of waiting upon you. I beg leave to present them to you, in this manner. They are gentlemen distinguished equally, by their personal merits and their public stations. 1Jeromus Johnson (1775–1846) was a New York City merchant who served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1825–29. He was appointed appraiser of merchandise for the port of New York in 1830 and held that office until he retired in 1840.

2Bartow White (1776–1862), a Fishkill, New York, physician, served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1825–27.

3Nicoll Fosdick (1785–1868), originally from New London, Connecticut, moved to the town of Norway in Herkimer County, New York, and served first in the state legislature and then in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1825–27. Fosdick returned to New London in 1843 and was collector of customs there, 1849–53.

4Henry Ashley (1778–1829) of Winchester, New Hampshire, moved to Catskill, New York, where he operated a tannery. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1825–27.
