From John Jay to Aaron Clark, 14 February 1820

To Aaron Clark

Bedford 14th Feby 1820

Sir

I have recd. your Letter of the 29 Ult. inclosing a Prospectus of a proposed Publication of “New York State Papers”—1

If the Collection should be sufficiently comprehensive, and the Selection be judiciously made, the work will in my Opinion be justly entitled to general Patronage— You have undertaken a Task which requires too much Research and Investigation ^and Research^ to be hastily performed— It is a task ^one^ which the Citizens of this State have many Inducements to encourage; and I hope the Results will be satisfactory both to them and to You— Be pleased to add my name to your Subscription List for three Copies—

In the Journals, and among the Papers, of the Committee of the City of NYork appointed in 1774, and of the State Conventions between that Period and the organization of the State Constitution ^Govt^ there were various ^interesting^ Entries and Documts.— where— or in what Condition those Journals and Papers now are, I am not informed— For the friendly Sentiments expressed in your Letter, accept the Acknowledgmts of Sir your obt Servt.

Aaron Clark Esqr Albany.
