From John Jay to George Alexander Otis, 27 May 1822

To George Alexander Otis

Bedford—WChester County—Nyork—27th. May 1822

Sir

It gave me pleasure to find ^from your Letter of the 19th Feby—^1 that my Remarks on certain Passages in the first Volume of Botta’s History had been communicated to, and approved by, Mr Adams and Mr. Jefferson.2 IOn have read all the ^reading that & the other^ Volumes, and have[?] I met with its additional Passages of which I doubted the accuracy— In compliance with your Request, I would readily endeavor to pursue? [illegible] be particular & explicit on these Topics, if the State of my Health would ^was such as to^ permit me to make the necessary Inquiries & Researches— ^To form^ & A just ^and satisfactory^ Estimate of the Information conveyed by this History, would require much previous and careful Examination— The sooner this may be done, the better; for Time will gradually make it more & more difficult to discover and correct mistakes—

I regret the Circumstances which prevented my having the pleasure of seeing you here; and hope that some favorable opportunity for it may yet occur— The friendly Sentiments expressed in your Letter make correspondent Impressions on Sir Your faithful & obt Servt George Alexander Otis Esqr Quincy—

Dft, NNC (EJ 90134, EJ: 08788). Endorsed: “To George Alexr Otis Esqr / (Quincy) / in ansr to 27 May / 19 Feby 1822—”.
