Sir,
Allow me to beg your acceptance of a Buffalo Robe adorned with porcupine quills, after the manner of the Missouri Indians. I take the liberty of offering you this, because it may, possibly, be rare in the Atlantic States. Captain Springer will do me the favour of handing it to you, together with a dozen of Beavers’ Tails—for the dressing of which the inclosed is the Canadian Receipt.1 With Sentiments of unfeigned respect I have the honour to be, Sir Your most obedient Servant

1. Turner enclosed the following recipe: “First, boil the Tail till it becomes soft & then broil it upon a gridiron until the fat or oil of it exudes in every direction. After this spread over the whole a coat composed of fine crumbs of bread and parsley, chopped very fine. Again lay it upon the gridiron till it becomes brown and crisp. In this state serve it up with Vinegar, Salt and Pepper” (AD, DLC:GW).
