Charleston, S.C., 24 Aug. 1792. Recommends for work in the Federal City “Mr Gevan a Stone Cutter,” who had “done the Cornice & other stone work on the State house in Charleston in a masterly manner” and who “is an industrious sober man.”1

1. Although Charleston resident Robert Given (died c.1801) apparently was not hired to work on the federal buildings in the Federal City, he was employed in 1795 to work in Philadelphia on the First United States Bank (City Gazette & Daily Advertiser [Charleston], 13 April 1795).
