From John Jay to Timothy Pickering, 6 June 1796

To Timothy Pickering

New York 6 June 1796

Sir

I was this Moment favored with your’s of the 4 Instant.1 under the last article any further arrangements which might become desireable or mutually beneficial may be made in an easy & convenient Manner— it enables the parties to bring into negociation any Propositions of that kind which they may think proper.

You will observe that the 3d article admits us to navigate in small vessels trading bona fide between Montreal and Quebec, under such Regulations as shall be established to prevent the Possibility of any Frauds in this Respect— These Regulations are yet to be made—

An Article which should have for its object the Prevention of Indian Wars, was the Subject of much Conversation between Lord Grenville and myself— perhaps it would be useful to resume it—

Disputes and Trespasses between american and british Traders may happen in the Indian Country— would it be improper to agree that if they occurred on our Side of the Line they should be cognizable by us; and if on their Side of the Line by them. The Expediency of some specific arrangement on this Head may merit attention—

Among the papers of my Correspondence with the late Secy. of State there is an article, drawn by the Ld. Chancellor, which among other Things respects the Proofs of Deeds & wills &c. and how papers shall be authenticated in the one Country to be admitted in Evidence in the other— this is an important Subject—

Purposing to go out of Town in the Morning, and having many little matters to dispatch in the mean Time, I am obliged to write in Haste. I have the Honor to be with great Respect Sir Your most obt. Servt.

John Jay

The Hon’ble Timothy Pickering Esqr Secy of State
