Tobias Lear to Henry Knox

By the Presidts commd T. Lear has the honor to return to the Secy of War the letters & enclosures from Govr Blount1 and to inform the Secy, that the Presidt conceivg the information contained therein to be highly interesting to the U.S. requests the Se[c]y to take them into serious consideratn & report to him thereon as early as may be—and at the same time to report on the letters from Governors Lee & Telfair wh. were yesterday submittd to the Presit.2 The P[r]esid. requests that Mr Shaw’s conduct may be criticaly scrutinizd.3

2Lear is referring to Georgia governor Edward Telfair’s letter to Knox of 3 April and Virginia governor Henry Lee’s letter to Knox of 12 April (Knox to GW, 18 April 1793, nn.2–3). Knox was asked to bring these letters, along with Blount’s letter and its enclosures, to a cabinet meeting on 22 April (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 116–17).
