Timothy Pickering to Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr., 30 December 1795

Timothy Pickering to Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr.

Department of State Decr 30. 1795.

Colo. Pickering incloses to Mr Dandridge a memorandum of the Director of the Mint, of copper he has purchased; for the payment of which Mr Dandridge will be so good as to make out an order in the usual form, & present it to the President for his approbation & signature.1

6495 lbs. at 2/4 amount to Dollars 2020 67/100.

AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, GW’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State.

1The enclosed memorandum recorded the purchase on 21 Dec. of “6495 lb Copper in Sheets & Bottoms for the use of the Mint” from Joseph Anthony (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). GW apparently made out an order authorizing payment from the contingent fund, for on 31 Dec., Pickering wrote Dandridge: “Mr Wolcott informed me that there was an appropriation for the purchase of copper, and of course the President’s order should apply to that fund, instead of the contingent fund. So I return the order you just now gave me, and inclose the draught of one which I take it corresponds with the ideas of the Secretary of the Treasury” (AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). GW’s final order, directing Treasury Secretary Oliver Wolcott, Jr., to “Pay to the Treasurer of the Mint, out of the Fund appropriated for the purchase of Copper for the Mint, two thousand and twenty Dollars and sixty seven Cents, to enable the Director to pay for 6495 pounds of Copper purchased by him of Joseph Anthony for the use of the Mint of the United States,” was dated 30 Dec. (LB, DLC:GW).
