The President of the United States in his advertisement of sundry lands has referred persons desirous of becoming purchasers to you for information.1 I should be glad to know whether his Lands on the Kanhawa are as yet undisposed of, what are the prices of the several tracts, & whether the whole taken together would not be sold on lower terms than separately Your answer sir may perhaps lead to further negotiation.2 I am sir yr obt servt

Augustine Jaquelin Smith (1774–1830), a doctor, represented Fairfax County in the Virginia legislature, 1796–98 and 1821–22.

2. Dandridge replied to Smith on 11 March that an “attentive perusal” of GW’s advertisement would reveal that he “does not intend to enter into any contract for these lands ’till next September,” although he would receive proposals in the meantime. If GW “is offered what he thinks them worth,” he would sell them then “either altogether or separately … but does not suppose that this will make any difference in price” (ViMtvL).
