From George Washington to Mary Atlee, 14 November 1793

To Mary Atlee

14th Novr 1793.

The President wishes Mrs Atlee to be assured that, his disposition to prevent tears of distress from flowing, is far beyond his means to accomplish; and that he should be extremely happy if the latter were adequate to the numerous calls that are made upon the former.

Mrs Atlees case being entirely unknown to the President—Her application of course, is not well understood by him.

The draft is docketed in part, “To Mrs or Miss Mary Atlee.” The copyist initially wrote “German Town” on the dateline in the letter book, but crossed that out and wrote “Lancaster.” GW left Germantown on 12 Nov. for Lebanon, Pa., to view the canal being constructed by the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Navigation Company near Quittapahilla Creek, and he returned via Lancaster, arriving back at Germantown on 16 November. GW was at Womelsdorf, Pa., on the evening of 13 Nov. and spent several hours at Reading, Pa., on 14 November. See JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed.
