1. James Angell and Paul J. Sullivan published the Maryland Journal and Baltimore Advertiser, and Samuel Hanson published the Columbian Chronicle at Georgetown, D.C. The enclosed advertisement offered the stud services of Knight of Malta, a jack imported from the island of Malta, and of Compound, a jack “from a Jenny of the same Island, and got by the large Spanish Jack (Royal Gift), and is now five Years old. They will cover at Mount Vernon, the ensuing Spring, at Four Pounds the Season (estimating a Dollar at Six Shillings), and a Half a Dollar to the Groom.” The services of Traveller, a “darkbay Horse, in his prime, full fifteen Hands high, handsomely formed and marked, and more than the Quarters blooded, will cover, at Forty Shillings (Dollars as above), and Half a Dollar to the Groom. Very good Pastures are to be had at Half a Dollar per Week, for each Mare or Jenny. The Fences are good, and the whole within an exterior one of Post and Rail, which contributes much to their Security; but against Thefts or Escapes there will be no Warranty. No Accounts will be raised for the covering of these Animals; of course, the whole Cost must be paid at the Stand, before the Females are taken therefrom” (Maryland Journal and Baltimore Advertiser, 28 Feb. 1794).
