From George Washington to the United States Senate, 5 August 1789

To the United States Senate

[New York] August 5th 1789

Gentlemen of the Senate

In the list of Nominations which I laid before you the 3d instant there was a mistake in giving in the name of David Lambert as Surveyor of the Port of Richmond. This mistake I now desire to correct by inserting in place thereof, the name of Corbin Braxton.1

LS, DNA: RG 46, First Congress, President’s Messages—Executive Nominations; LB, DLC:GW. This message was delivered to the Senate by Tobias Lear (DHFC, description begins Linda Grant De Pauw et al., eds. Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America, March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791. 20 vols. to date. Baltimore, 1972–. description ends 2:22).

1With this message in the Senate records is the following letter to Samuel Otis from Tobias Lear, 4 Aug. 1789: “Among the nominations which were made by the President of the United States and yesterday laid before the Senate for their advice & consent—was the name of David Lambert for the Surveyor of Richmond in Virginia. The President understood that he had been the Searcher at that place under the State, and therefore put him in nomination as Surveyor, but he has this morning been informed that David Lambert has not been in the Office, or discharged the duties of Searcher; he therefore wishes the name of Corbin Braxton to be substituted in the place of David Lambert—and has accordingly directed me to give you this information, that the change may be made before the nominations for Virginia are taken into consideration by the Senate of the United States” (DHFC, description begins Linda Grant De Pauw et al., eds. Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America, March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791. 20 vols. to date. Baltimore, 1972–. description ends 2:23).
