From George Washington to the United States Senate, 7 August 1790

To the United States Senate

United States [New York] August 7th 1790.

Gentlemen of the Senate.

I nominate Jabez Bowen1 to be Commissioner of Loans in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. and

Daniel Benezet Junior2 to be Collector of the Port of Great Egg Harbour in the State of New Jersey.

A “c” was written in a different hand after each nomination on the receiver’s copy, probably signifying Senate confirmation of or concurrence to the appointments, both of which the Senate considered and approved the same day they were submitted (DHFC, description begins Linda Grant De Pauw et al., eds. Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America, March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791. 20 vols. to date. Baltimore, 1972–. description ends 2:90, n.54).
